I discovered the first two songs on this album while looking through old photographs with my Grandmother. We came across two pieces of sheet music, and she told me they had been sent to my Great Grandfather, a championship old time fiddler, by a musical colleague of his from a neighbouring town. Having never formally explored my families' musical or cultural roots, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my own musical path had intersected many times with music that sounded like these tunes. As a trio, we didn't necessarily approach these tunes with any sort of historical accuracy or modern interpretation, as much as we just played them, or they played themselves. More importantly, we got together and played them together in the music room, gathered around the piano, the way I'm sure my Great Grandfather would have with his musical colleagues in Woodville, Manitoba.

The final song was written in tribute to my family,
based on real quotes from them to me,
painting small pictures of their legacies.

Track Name: Thrive
My Mama told me when I was young
She'd send me to school so when I was done
I could spread my wings and fly
and fly and fly

My Daddy told me when I was young
He'd provide for me 'til the work was done
So I could take the stage and shine and shine and shine

So I studied and I worked and travelled round the world
I played and I lived and I learned all I could
Because they said I should
Now I start every day knowing that i have the joy I have
Because they said I would

My Brother told me when I was young
He'd make a million dollars so when he was done
I could hit the road and drive and drive and drive

My Grandma told me when I was young
Music would be with me 'til my days were done
So I should play my song and thrive and thrive and thrive
